In the Footsteps
of the Buddha
Commemorating the 100th Birth Anniversary of
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh
Meeting the
Historical Buddha
Join Dharma teachers (Dharmacharyas) Shantum Seth and Brian Kimmel for an extraordinary pilgrimage In the Footsteps of the Buddha.
This journey is an invitation to "meet the historical Buddha... living in the present, whether it is 2,600 years ago or now." We will walk the sacred earth of his birth, enlightenment, teaching, and passing. By being in these physical spaces, we begin to "see the context of his life out of which these teachings came, the people he met," moving from an intellectual understanding of the Dharma to a deeply somatic one.
This is "both an internal journey, but we explore the external landscape... that hasn't changed in some ways since the Buddha's time, and yet are very, very contemporary in another way."
We walk to touch the earth of his awakening, to resource our spirits, and to cultivate the resilience needed to meet our world with compassion and clarity.

A Living Lineage
This specific journey is curated to honor major milestones within the Plum Village tradition: the 100th birth anniversary of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay), and the 60th anniversary of the Order of Interbeing.
Though Thay transitioned in 2022, we commemorate his life on this pilgrimage in order to physically continue the practices and offerings he made throughout his life. As Shantum notes, "It's a journey that started in 1988 with Thich Nhat Hanh, and every year since then" he has guided practitioners along this path.
We are honored to continue this living lineage and invite the global Sangha to join us.
A Collective Transformation
In times of turmoil, we return to the source. 2,600 years ago, amidst great social upheaval, Siddhartha Gautama made the radical choice to "go forth"—leaving behind the known world to find a path to liberation that could serve all beings. Today, as we navigate our own era of division and uncertainty, we are called to walk that same path.

This is not a vacation.
It is a response.
Because we travel as an intimate, capped Sangha, we aren't just taking a solitary journey. "When we travel as a community, it makes it much more powerful because we're then traveling with 15 pairs of eyes, 15 pairs of ears, and seeing it as a collective transformation too."
Guided by "India herself [as] a great teacher," practicing in these spaces will allow us to experience our own awakening and insights. We will provide additional opportunities to practice leading up to the journey, and afterwards, to integrate the experiences we have had together.
